Rookie Camp 2018

Sunday Skate & Free Skate Friday

PRG hosts open gym time on several Sundays each month so anyone interested in learning to skate, or in playing roller derby, has a chance to work on basic skating skills.  Come to Wainaku Gym between 10am and 12pm. Skate some laps and work on the basics at your own pace.  Get pointers and advice from other skaters in a casual, low-key environment.  If you'd like to get more comfortable on wheels before jumping into Rookie Camp, this is the perfect opportunity.

You can also attend Free Skate Friday, PRG's community open-skate, also at Wainaku Gym, many Fridays from 6-8pm.

Schedule varies, so contact us before heading to the gym.  While everyone is welcome to skate at FSF, Sunday is for adults only.

Come to Practice!

You can also begin attending league practices at any point in the season.  Our league LOVES having new faces at practice, and welcomes anyone who brings a good attitude and willingness to learn. You may be invited to join team drills and exercises once the coaches verify your skill level, and in the meantime you will learn a LOT by watching.  Plus, you'll get to know your teammates!

In general, our practice schedule is:

Mondays, 7-9pm, Wainaku Gym

Wednesdays, 7-9pm, Sangha Hall

Contact us before heading for the gym - dates and times may vary.

If you're interested in working on your skating skills, learning the sport of roller derby, joining our competitive team, or being a referee or volunteer, this is your chance!

Come to Rookie Camp ready to work hard and have a blast! Most new league members have no previous roller derby (or even skating) experience, which means accepting a lot of new challenges. PRG is a supportive community and we celebrate one another’s successes, no matter how big or small each step might be. Show up, train hard, and cheer for everyone - including yourself!

Rookie Camp is 8 weeks long and taught by experienced PRG coaches. Practices will cover basic skating (form, crossovers, stops, and safe falls), off-skates drills for general fitness, and introductory roller derby skills. At the end of Rookie Camp, skaters interested in learning more advanced roller derby skills and gameplay will be assessed for skill level to ensure that it's safe for them to participate in contact drills. Rookie Camp will be held at Wainaku Gym, Sundays from 10am-12pm and Mondays from 7pm-9pm. Participants are expected to attend all sessions.

Skaters

Skater membership in PRG is open to all women age 18 and older. Roller derby is a full-contact sport so all skating participants are required to carry health insurance and have appropriate protective gear.

PRG holds Rookie Camps each season. Skaters of every shape, size, age, and ability are invited to come and learn the basics.

Participants will not be discriminated against based on their race, national origin, ethnic background, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition, religion, income, veteran status, weight, or skill level.  Everyone can participate in some capacity.

Officials

PRG is always recruiting referees and officials.

No experience required, can be male or female, all ages are welcome.  Just bring your love of derby and we will teach you the rest! Email paradiserollergirls@gmail.com for more information.
